The ignition distributor's rotating shaft allows the high voltage from the ignition coil to be routed to the spark plugs in the correct firing order and at the desired time.
The distributor cap and rotor are the most common distributor components to fail, and fortunately these are almost always available separately. If the bearings or other major components fail it is likely that the distributor will need to be replaced as this is usually more cost effective than a repair.
Unless otherwise specified, new or remanufactured replacement distributors will come as complete units ready to bolt in place.
